BOTOX®

BOTOX® in Chicago

While aging may be unavoidable, it doesn’t have to be noticeable. For many men and women, BOTOX® has become the go-to treatment for treating wrinkles before they have the chance to deepen into prominent creases. At the Rhinoplasty Institute of Chicago, our experienced surgeon has helped countless patients leverage BOTOX® as a proactive and long-term solution to tackling the effects of aging without invasive treatment.

Not all wrinkles are caused by muscle activity. For lines and wrinkles caused by a loss of volume in the face, we offer dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm®, Sculptra®, Belotero, Collagen, Restylane®, and Fat Injections.

The Problem: Wrinkles

The natural aging process makes itself known in many ways – sun damage, hyperpigmentation, sagging skin, the list goes on. Perhaps the first and most noticeable sign of getting older is fine lines, which ultimately deepen into wrinkles.

Fine lines initially develop as a result of facial expressions. Our smiles, frowns, and even quizzical facial expressions are all caused by facial muscles below the surface of our skin. When we’re young, high levels of collagen and elastin proteins in the skin allow facial skin to bounce back to its original position after we’re done smiling or frowning without lines staying behind. Over time, sun exposure and environmental factors can break down these important proteins and suppress production. As a result, facial expressions tend to stay on the face longer in the form of fine lines and creases.

Innovation in cosmetic treatment has led to the development of many new, non-invasive ways to treat wrinkles before and after they’ve developed. BOTOX® is one such solution.

Behind BOTOX®

Botulinum toxin type A, better known as BOTOX®, is a highly purified derivative of Clostridium botulinum, a microbe responsible for food poisoning. As a medical treatment, however, the purified form of the toxin can be used to temporarily paralyze muscles by blocking nerve receptors within muscle from receiving signals. This causes muscles to relax and soften. This unique feature has made BOTOX® an extremely popular treatment option for a wealth of medical conditions caused by spontaneous muscle spasms. Some of the most popular medical uses of BOTOX® include:

  • Lazy eye and eye twitching
  • Muscular contractures
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMD
  • Chronic Migraines
  • Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating
  • Bladder dysfunction

In the realm of cosmetic treatment, this injection has become one of the most popular anti-aging solutions. As with other muscles in the body, BOTOX® applied to key areas of the face help relax hyper-active muscles responsible for wrinkles and lines. As the formula is injected, it can be applied to almost any part of the face, including the eyebrows, near the eyes, forehead, neck, chin, and near the mouth. BOTOX® also comes in many forms, giving patients the option to personalize the facial rejuvenation treatment to better meet their needs. Among the most popular options are:

BOTOX®

Brand name BOTOX® treatment is recommended for targeted wrinkle treatment due to the use of larger molecules within the formula. BOTOX® injections usually take effect within 48 hours of treatment. However, some patients may not see final results for up to a week following treatment.

Xeomin®

Another popular form of botulinum toxin treatment, Xeomin®, is recommended for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (otherwise known as the elevens). Unlike BOTOX® and Dysport, this treatment can take up to a month for final results to be noticeable. However, Xeomin® does not include any additives, meaning it takes a bit longer for people to develop a resistance to the treatment.

Dysport

Due to the smaller molecule size, Dysport diffuses away from the injection site a bit more than other botulinum toxin treatments, making it more effective for use in the forehead. Compared to other formulas, Dysport results are noticeable within 3 days following treatment.

Benefits of BOTOX®

Beyond providing lasting results, BOTOX® offers a number of advantages to patients. Some of the most popular reasons why patients choose to undergo this injectable include:

BOTOX® can be used proactively and reactively

With BOTOX®, it pays to be proactive. Unlike other treatments that don’t make sense to pursue until there are visible lines or wrinkles, this injectable provides the best results when injected early on in the aging process. More often, individuals who choose BOTOX® are younger men and women looking to slow the development of wrinkles, allowing them to age gracefully.

Natural looking results

Perhaps one of the biggest concerns patients have when getting BOTOX® is that the injections will “freeze” their face or prevent them from expressing their unique facial expressions. When completed by an experienced injector like Dr. Dutton, BOTOX® looks natural and doesn’t inhibit an individual’s ability to move their face.

Flexible application

Because BOTOX® treatments only offer temporary paralysis, specialists can gradually adjust dosage and application sites so that the injection enhances your natural appearance as you grow older. This flexible application means that patients are given the unique opportunity to control the aging process.

Who is a Candidate for BOTOX®?

As BOTOX® is non-invasive and completely safe, the treatment is an excellent option for most healthy patients. At our Chicago cosmetic surgery practice, BOTOX® has been successfully used to treat:

  • Vertical frown lines on the forehead
  • Horizontal forehead creases
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Fine lines around the mouth and on the upper lip
  • Lines across the bridge of the nose

Alternatives to BOTOX®

While BOTOX® is an excellent solution for getting ahead of the effects of aging, not all wrinkles or fine lines may respond to treatment. Volume loss due to diminished collagen production can also result in the development of wrinkles throughout the face. For individuals facing volume-derived creases and fine lines, we recommend dermal fillers to restore volume. During your consultation with Dr. Dutton, our Chicago specialist can help you determine which of our available treatment options will best suit your needs. In addition to BOTOX®, the Rhinoplasty Institute of Chicago offers Juvéderm®, Sculptra®, Belotero, Collagen, Restylane® and Fat Injections.

What to Expect During Treatment

BOTOX® injections are performed using a fine needle and only take a few minutes in our office. Most patients say that the pain from the needle is slight, so anesthesia is not required. If you are concerned, however, we can use a topical anesthetic.

The effects of BOTOX® are typically seen in about three days. These effects last about four months; the injections must be repeated two or three times annually in order to maintain your results.

No recovery period is required after BOTOX® injections. You can go home immediately and continue almost all normal activities, including the application of makeup. Dr. Dutton will advise that you not lie down for the first few hours, and you should avoid massaging the injection areas for a couple of days. You should also refrain from strenuous exercise for 48 hours.

Some people experience minor tenderness and bruising at the injection sites, but these effects resolve quickly. Dr. Dutton’s patients find that BOTOX® injections are a simple, non-invasive way to look younger without the necessity of taking time off from work.
