As we age, we lose collagen, which helps to support the structure of the skin. Lines and wrinkles are the inevitable result. Collagen injections restore this lost natural collagen in both men and women, smoothing lines, wrinkles, and even scars. They can be used to slightly lift and fill sunken areas on the face as well.
Benefits of Collagen
- Diminish crow’s feet, frown lines, nasolabial folds, creases, and furrows
- Fill sunken areas of the face, such as the area around the cheekbones
- Improve the appearance of depressed scars
- Enhance the lips to make them fuller
More than one injectable filler may be recommended to achieve the best results. Other fillers include Restylane®, Radiesse®, Sculptra®, Belotero, and Juvéderm®, and BOTOX® injections are required for some types of wrinkles.
The Collagen Procedure
The collagen used in cosmetic injections comes from cows, so a skin allergy test is performed prior to your injections. If you know you are allergic to bovine products, you should avoid collagen injections. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid collagen.
The procedure takes only a few minutes depending on the number of areas to be treated. Collagen injections contain Lidocaine for numbing to reduce the sting of the fine needle.
The body resorbs the collagen over time, so the results usually last 3-6 months.
Collagen Injection Recovery
Like other facial fillers, you need no downtime after collagen injections. You can return to your normal activities right away, and the results will gradually appear during the week after your procedure.
Most patients experience some mild bruising, swelling, and tenderness at the injection sites. These usually resolve within a week, and you can use makeup to cover any bruises.
Most people find that the slight after-effects during the healing process are mild and well worth the results of a facial filler.
