Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job or nose reshaping surgery, is a procedure that reshapes the nose to the appearance that best fits your face, regardless of your ethnicity.

Much like your hair shade, eye color, or skin tone, your nose reflects your lineage. Its structure, shape, and size are unique to you. Some patients want to preserve their nose appearance while making subtle changes. In contrast, others want to make significant alterations to change this distinctive trait. What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

We refer to the ethnic rhinoplasty procedure as cosmetic nose surgery for patients who are not Caucasian.  Highly trained with extensive experience in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Dutton is an excellent choice to perform nasal correction for one of the most complex operations in aesthetic medicine. With the diverse culture of Chicago and his annual medical mission trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, he is well-experienced in operating on a variety of ethnic nose structures. These include:

African American Rhinoplasty

African American patients have a wide range of nose structures. Many patients desire more definition to the nasal tip, an augmentation to the nasal bridge, or correction of flared nostrils.  African American patients present different challenges due to factors that only a qualified surgeon with years of experience in facial and nasal surgery can distinguish. Dr. Dutton can build up a structure where it is lacking, like on the bridge of the nose. He is an expert at refining the nose tip, reducing nostril width, and artistically determining how to adjust the underlying bone or cartilage to give each patient their desired results.

Latin American Rhinoplasty

Patients with Hispanic Heritage have different facial features depending on their country of origin. Latin Americans typically refer to individuals from Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, as well as Portugal and Spain. Although each group has similar nose structures, there are subtle differences. These patients usually seek help with issues such as thick nasal skin and weak cartilage at the tip. A flared nasal base that is wide and a pronounced bump on the nasal bridge are other common complaints.

Refinement is achieved by removing excess tissue at the base of the nose, causing a narrowing effect.  Overcoming the thick skin that covers the weak cartilage at the tip can also produce a thinner result. Building up cartilage in the tip of the nose provides a defined base for the skin to cover.

Middle Eastern Rhinoplasty

This intricate procedure focuses on reducing the overall nose size by determining which parts need refinement. The tip may need reshaping with length or width brought into better proportions. Or a reduction of the dorsal hump may be necessary. Sculpting the nose tip can resolve a bulbous or round shape and enhance your facial balance.  The goal is a natural, beautiful nose that complements your other facial features.

Asian Rhinoplasty

One of the critical components of Asian rhinoplasty is narrowing the nostril width. The bottom section of the nostrils, the sills, can be broad. Correcting this aspect of the nose can be performed in conjunction with other Asian rhinoplasty elements, but most often with narrowing and refinement of the tip.

Asian rhinoplasty usually requires a mostly external incision. However, Dr. Dutton expertly conceals the external incision in the groove between the alar and the upper junction of the lip and cheek.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Recovery

The first two weeks are critical in the ethnic rhinoplasty healing process. You will experience bruising and swelling, and your nasal structure will be supported by a splint for the first week. Dr. Dutton will provide you with clear instructions for your ethnic rhinoplasty recovery, including:

  • Avoid bending your head over.
  • Don’t blow your nose or sneeze.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or exercise for up to six weeks.
  • Sleep with your head elevated over your chest.
  • Use cold compresses to reduce swelling.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Take short walks to ensure proper circulation.
  • Avoid activities that may risk any impact on your nose.

Dr. Dutton will explain that you will need at least two weeks of downtime after surgery. That means no work or strenuous activity during this initial phase of recovery, but you can expect to gradually increase your activities after this period.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Benefits

There are multiple benefits a patient can attain from ethnic rhinoplasty. Dr. Dutton strives to bring each of his patients the facial symmetry and appearance that increases their beauty and confidence. These benefits include:

  • A nose that functions correctly—improves breathing difficulties, chronic sinus infections, or problems that occur from trauma.
  • Facial balance—a nose that is in perfect proportion to your face by reducing or increasing its size.
  • Maintain your look—Patients want to be recognizable when the surgery is complete. You want to look like you, only better.
